SMPlayer Portable

SMPlayer Portable Edition is a special version of SMPlayer (for Windows) which tries to not write anything outside from the directory where it is installed, so it can be used from external devices like pendrives.

You can get a package from here:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil … _id=216202

To install it, just uncompress it wherever you want. To run it just double click on smplayer.exe.

The package includes:

* SMPlayer (portable version)
* A MPlayer build
* Translations and icon themes

What are the differences with the normal SMPlayer?

* By default it will save the ini files in the smplayer's folder.
* It won't try to create the smplayer home directory or the screenshot directory (C:\Documents and Settings\User\.smplayer\...)
* It won't write anything in the Windows registry (for that reason the file associations are not available in this version)
* The screenshot option is disabled by default.

How to know if you're really using the portable version?

Go to Help -> About SMPlayer, it should say something like this:
"Version: 0.6.2 (Portable Edition)"

Re: SMPlayer Portable

Very useful, thank you. If you choose a System-Font in subtitle settings, SMPlayer exit with 'Exit Code 1'...

this happened to me too some time (and version ago) - i think the solution was to delete the fonts cache...

Re: SMPlayer Portable

I think the mplayer build included in the package doesn't have support for fontconfig, so selecting a system font just simply won't work.

Re: SMPlayer Portable

Just a thought, but I think that perhaps it would be better if cache was also disabled (like in Firefox Portable) to save wear and tear on flash drives.

Re: SMPlayer Portable

I think mplayer uses the RAM for the cache.

Hi,

Please, give me 1 good reason I should use regular (not portable) version of SMPlayer? Does it have *any* advantages over the portable one?

Thanks,

latet

Re: SMPlayer Portable

Well, the normal version allows to associate the file types with smplayer.

And fontconfig (system fonts) is disabled on the portable version, although it can be enabled easily removing the -nofontconfig in preferences->advanced.

Can I "install" the extra codeds pack into the portable version? How exectly?

Thanks,

Simply copy the codecs into the 'codecs' folder which should be in the same directory as 'mplayer.exe'. If not create it.

Re: SMPlayer Portable

SMPlayer Portable 0.6.3 is available:

smplayer-portable_0.6.3.zip

This time is in a zip package, as it seems some people didn't like 7z. Because of that, the package is 5 MB bigger than before...

Another change, the screenshot option is enabled by default.

The version of mplayer included is the same as v. 0.6.2 (r27128, I think). If you have trouble with it, you could try the new one I've just compiled: mplayer-r27666-mingw.7z

Re: SMPlayer Portable

So, please pardon me for being dense, but I thought if I unzipped SMplayer portable onto a USB drive I would be able automatically to play such Real streams as are on the BBC. I can play specific URLs such as the one above, but simply clicking on the "Listen" button still gets me BBC's "install real first" message. What does this po' po' boy need to do? Thanks forever and a day for any solution. (Our IT department is changing us all over to a very secure XP environment and will not allow us to use Real any more, either.) -John

Re: SMPlayer Portable

No, the latest version is also in a 7z package. 7z packages take less space than zips.

I don't know why people wouldn't like 7z packages, they can also be opened with programs like winrar.

Re: SMPlayer Portable

Probably for reason of not wanting to install extra software, including WinRAR, to use only Windows' built-in zip functionality. If 7z is more superior compressing than zip, stick with it. I have a tiny upload speed and would hate having to upload 5MB extra.

If you install the portable version inside Program Files in Vista, you will stumble upon permission problems and running as admin is simply not safe. Therefore this version is optimal for portable usage only, unless you want to keep the program in My Documents or whatever. This is the main difference between portable and regular versions of ANY application, actually.

Re: SMPlayer Portable

I want to add something regarding portable SMPlayer.

Regarding file association. I read on the forum regarding one build for all (portable and non-portable).
I'm one that agree it could be easier and better for user and the developer. I normally have to wait for the portable build even though I want to try the new features on non-portable build. And waiting for portable build could "distract" users from checking the update frequently.
Just my opinion though.

Anyway, an alternative is a simple exe or script can be used to automate the creation or removal of file association. That way, SMPlayer won't need to write to system partition at all. Other benefit is that user is able to integrate and disintegrate SMPlayer on a USB stick easily (with execution of 2 .exe). Other alternative is a program called CAFE can be used to associate file type portably when USB is used. And regarding users are having difficulties with setting .ini path in commandline, maybe a GUI option can be used to increase user-friendliness.

EDIT:
I was wrong about the osd and sub size. It seems some options can be changed from config file, while some are fixed from SMPlayer. I guess not everything can be changed from the config file.
